I’m not expecting the Court in Strasbourg to be helpful but it exists. Even the U.K. is a party to the Convention, and has incorporated it in domestic law via the Human Rights Act. The European Court of Human Rights should not be confused with the Court of Justice of the European Union, it has nothing to do with the E.U.
Nah man, all countries claim to have freedom of speech, but there are always clauses written to limit it
The main ones are harm and public morals, if one or more countries manage to prove one or the other through convoluted reasoning they can theoretically suppress any speech or freedom even in a democracy
The main check in democracies is mostly the general public and the intellectual elites, those are the ones you need to get on your side
