Apparently, some Onlyfans accounts were linked to child abuse, and just like Tumblr, OF’s financial backers decided to pull support from OF unless they banned all porn from the website, this will undoubtedly result in Onlyfans losing 90% of their subscriber-base and it has been yet another massive blow to sex workers.
A lot of people are reasonably angry about this.
There are debates on what exactly is going behind the scenes. Personally, it seems obvious to me that every financial institution in the world is comprised of greedy, puritanical, parasites who hate pornography but not so much that they are unwilling to exploit sex workers for personal gain. These financial institutions have a habit of funding pornographic platforms and then when it becomes too much to handle, they will manufacture an issue or over-exaggerate an easily rectifiable problem to get the platform shut down.
The ground that sex workers stand on is quickly collapsing beneath their fleet.
But isn’t that mutually assured destruction for a company like Only Fans which is known for its adult content? Without it, it doesn’t really have any distinguishing “products”. I’m not even sure how such a move was designed to increase profit.
So… financial suicide? Coming from an Asian background, I’ve seen “suicide as a message” so many times that I can only mock it, so I guess that it’s more financial seppuku?
It seems very obvious that only fans has a metaphorical gun to their head right now. All apps, websites, and businesses depend on financial bakers and if those financial bakers refuse to support sex work, their funded platforms have no chance of succeeding without that support.
A rival, explicitly pornographic app known as ‘‘Just for Fans’’ has recently begun accepting OF refugees, however, its fees are much higher than that of OF.
I mean it’s their literal financial partners and payment services like PayPal. They are kinda being forced. PayPal especially is notorious to quit business ties if it’s even just a tad sexual.
Yeah, but I hope OF and these payment processors realize that this is the only way that OF can remain relevant.
They’re not going to be the next Patreon, SubscribeStar, or any other payment/support portal. They will die because of this. All we can do is hope there are other payment processors willing to step up.
