We’re aware of an issue where sometimes the website says donations didn’t go through. This is usually a bug and the donations process normally. We have a number of projects, but if you’re coming from IWF, I’m guessing you’d be mostly interested in our efforts to detect and remove CSAM and deter people from viewing it.
Our CSAM Deterrence Campaign uses advertisements on search results for common CSAM-related terms to redirect would-be viewers to support. This is based on the finding that 33% of CSAM viewers (likely far more than will ever be caught) want support to stop viewing illegal content but only 3% are able to find that support (source). Our ads redirect them to our Get Help page, which lists a number of therapy and self-help tools designed for people struggling to stop viewing illegal content. This reduces the number of people viewing and sharing such content, reducing its spread. A grant funds the ads, but we use donations to build the list of resources we can provide to people when they click the ads. Long-term goals here include building out our resources list to make it more effective and increase the number of people who are able to find support.
We also develop tools that help social media and other platforms scan uploads for known CSAM images and remove them for moderator review if a match is detected. Development is directly funded by donations, and you can learn more about our existing plugin and another one we have planned here. The new plugin and ongoing updates to the existing one are the long-term goals of this project, and we may also work on additional plugins and collaborate with third-party developers to support similar external projects in the future.
