Tutorial: how to donate using Monero

Following the PayPal fiasco and given the ever-present risk of government surveillance of credit card transactions, we sometimes receive enquiries from people who want to know how to donate more securely and anonymously.

The best way to do this is using the Monero cryptocurrency. Monero is a cryptocurrency that is similar to Bitcoin, except that is designed to be anonymous.

Unfortunately it’s a little more complex to use than a regular credit card payment, but here are the steps that you’ll probably need to go through.

  1. Download a wallet that supports both Bitcoin and Monero. We recommend Edge.

  2. Since it’s hard to buy Monero directly, buy some Bitcoins instead. You can do this directly in Edge using its “Buy cryptocurrency” function.

  3. Convert the Bitcoin into Monero using the “Exchange” function of Edge.

  4. Go to this donation page—which is different from our regular donation page, which doesn’t support Monero! You don’t need to enter your real personal details here: make something up, if you want.

  5. Once you are ready to check out, click “Scan” in Edge to scan the QR code shown on the page to send your payment. It will take about 15 minutes for your payment to be confirmed.
