So, I’ve been kinda thinking about this idea lately. I wanna make it clear: I don’t disagree with what this message is trying to say. Just because you have a mental disorder/illness doesn’t give you an excuse to harm others. That’s true.
But…
I do think this goes two ways. If we are responsible for handling our mental disorder, then society is responsible for providing the tools to help us manage said disorder. We’re responsible for taking our meds and going to therapy, but society has to provide that medicine and those doctors in the first place.
Mentally ill people, including those with pedophilic disorder, are expected to behave themselves (rightfully so), but aren’t given any help in this endeavor. People are told to keep their mental illness and trauma to themselves and deal with it privately with medicine and coping skills, but never given easy access to the things that will help us. It takes more time and money and effort for the mentally ill to become like “normal" people, yet it often feels like we’re expected to figure all this out on our own.
Even if we want help, we’re discouraged from asking for it, the stigma is too strong. No therapist wants to touch pedophilia even with a ten-foot pole! And even when help is technically available, it’s too expensive. We destroy our own time and finances just to become “stable”. No wonder there’s supposedly a mental health crisis! I mean, good God…
Ah, sorry for my pessimism lately. If you saw my other recent post, you’ll prolly realize I’m in a rather dark place as of late. It’s been a rough past few years…
